Emotive, textural and organic, Fiona Hill’s work is defined by what the Music Trust calls “striking timbral exploration of abstract sonic properties,” and by her “seamless working in of live electronics” (Sydney Arts Guide). Blending new technologies with corporeal, tactile sound worlds, she creates detailed and immersive sonic environments. Through layers of texture and harmony, her music forms a deep, expansive foundation on which melodic ideas – rooted in freedom and expressive spirit – can unfold.

As a composer, Fiona’s practice is increasingly collaborative, shaped both by her direct engagement with sonic materials and her creative partnerships with artists across disciplines. Her work has received significant recognition, including winning the 2022 Stelvio Cipriani International Film Scoring Competition, the 2021 ‘Best Film Score’ at the Seoul International Short Film Festival, and nominations at the APRA AMCOS Screen Music Awards (‘Best Music for a Short Film’ 2021) and the APRA/AMCOS Australian Music Centre Art Music Awards (‘Work of the Year – Large Ensemble’ 2022; ‘Work of the Year – Electroacoustic/Sound Art’ 2020).

Fiona has composed for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (Śūnyatā), Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows (Palynology), Sydney Dance Company (Habituate, Circumstance 2020, Springtime Again, Energetic Force), and Ensemble Offspring (Pentography). Her electroacoustic and multichannel works include Chromoson, Imago, In:Flux, Unity in Blue and Spider. Her screen work spans award-winning short films such as Circumstance 2020, as well as A Dog’s Tale (TV), the Healing Our Trauma web series, and acclaimed shorts Loveproof and Two Nights.

Fiona holds a Masters degree from the Australian Film Television and Radio School and a PhD from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she is now a Lecturer in Composition for Creative Industries. View Fiona’s University of Sydney profile here.
